Not sure if you need a new aerial? Concerned that a new aerial will cost the earth? Don't want to be smooth talked into buying something you don't need? Been told you need a new TV to receive Digital TV? All sounds familiar?
Well here are the facts for free!
If you have an old aerial on the roof or in the loft then you can receive BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and, depending on your location, perhaps a snowy channel 5. If you have a small set-top aerial, maybe in a bedroom, then you will receive all of the channels mentioned above but they may well be snowy or have interference on them.
If you have had a new aerial fitted within the last couple of years it is probably a Digital aerial. With this type of aerial you will receive the same channels as mentioned above. But if you buy an inexpensive Freeview box, around £30, then you will receive the Freeview TV channels and all the Freeview radio stations. 60 or so channels. What happens if I buy a Freeview box and have
an old aerial that isn't suitable for Digital?
Great question and very interesting to find out. Plug your old
aerial directly into the back of the new Freeview box and follow
the tuning instructions. At the end of this procedure one of 3
things will happen. 1. No Digital channels are found. 2. All the
Digital channels are found. 3. Some of the Digital channels
are found, some are fine but others freeze and pixellate.
Now, if all the channels are present and correct with no
picture problems you just saved yourself the cost of a new
aerial. Good eh? If you have no channels or missing
channels then a new aerial should get you sorted.
And all this without buying a new TV! So long as your current TV has a scart socket then you are in business. If it doesn't call us for other options using the coaxial socket on your TV.
